Hyundai Heavy and Maersk Tankers are developing next generation liquefied CO₂ carriers to be ready for the market by 2015.

As part of the Finncap project that captures CO₂ from power plants in Finland, the new carriers will deliver and offload captured CO₂ at the injection wells in the North Sea.

Hyundai Heavy has already completed basic designs for semi-refrigerated and semi-pressurized CO₂ carriers in cooperation with Maersk Tankers and also plans to develop multiple-use ships that can carry CO₂ /LPG or CO₂ /ammonia.

As more governments move to reduce greenhouse gas emission, Maersk estimates the global demand for CO₂ carriers will increase and reach 380 vessels by 2020.
