The consortium led by Hyundai Heavy Industries signed an MOU on January 25 with Yunus Brothers for YUNA Project to build a 50MW wind farm at Sindh in southern Pakistan.
HHI will install 30 units of 1.65MW wind turbines manufactured at the company¡¯s wind turbine shop in Gunsan City. The wind farm will generate 150,000MWh electricity annually when completed by the end of 2011. The electricity produced will power 60,000 households and will help alleviate Pakistan¡¯s chronic electricity shortage.
The Hyundai consortium, composed of Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korean Southern Power Co., Hyundai Engineering Co., Hyundai Corp, has a 49% stake of Special Purpose Company for YUNA Project. Yunus Brothers holds the remaining shares.
Hyundai Heavy will supply the core equipment, wind turbines and profit from electricity sales distributed by its stake after the wind farm goes online.
"Hyundai Heavy Industries sees huge possibilities in Pakistan. The country has 1,046km of coast with an average wind speed of 25km/h. This means it can accommodate 50,000MW wind farm in its territory,¡± said the company¡¯s spokesman.
Hyundai Heavy has been operating Korea¡¯s biggest wind turbine manufacturing facility with 600MW capacity in Gunsan City since October, 2009. The company took orders for six 1.65MW wind turbines from Wave Wind, USA and six wind turbines for Taebaek City in Gangwon province, Korea in 2009. The company signed an MOU with Jeonbuk provincial government of Korea to build a 200MW wind farm.
